Step 21 to Selling Your House: Transfer Utilities

Step 21 to Selling Your Home - Utilities Transfer

Schedule the Transfer of Utilities

Now that we are getting closer to settlement you want to transfer or cancel all utilities for the property. Unless you enjoy paying other people’s bills, schedule the termination of your utilities for the day of closing. If you’re moving into another home, schedule them to be transferred to the new address.

Cancel Contracts for Services

Before the actual closing date, make a list of the utilities you pay, electricity, natural gas, garbage, sewer/water, internet/cable, security company etc.

Don’t forget about home services like your pest control, lawn care, and dog walker. If you have a maintenance contract with an HVAC company to service your system twice a year be sure to let them know as well.

Forward Mail

Lastly, don’t forget to forward your mail. You can have your mail forwarded to your new address for up to 12 months. But don’t forget to update your address with vendors, the post office won’t forward things like magazines.
