Vlog 12 – Preparing Your Alexandria Home for Sale for Photos: Kitchen Clutter

This is the 2nd video in our series on “Preparing Your Alexandria Home for Sale for Photos”. The last video I covered the why behind professional photography and the kitchen as a general space to clear and clean, but we need to put a little focus on the general catch-all appliance that is your refrigerator. You’ll want to clear all magnets, calendars, family photos, recipe cards, shopping list, etc. from the surfaces of your fridge. The refrigerator should be clean and look like it just going to be placed in a magazine.

We know it’s not realistic for it to stay in magazine ready state, it’s for the photos and nothing more. People showing your home understand you live there, but they don’t want to see that you live there in the photos. Remember that you’re selling the home, and photos sell the idea that there is space for their own belongings in. They want to see their own children’s artwork and memorabilia magnets on that refrigerator.

If your kitchen has glass front or open shelving, reduce the number of place settings worth of dishes you have on display, and make sure they all look nice, neat, stacked, and visually pleasing. You don’t want to show the shelves jam packed with kids plastic mismatched character plates, and tacky tourist mugs from every place you visited on your last vacation. Think magazine. You want to show your home in the best possible light, and clutter will not showcase these features like a nice 4-person setting of quality matched plate ware will.

An often-overlooked place in our kitchen area is any hanging entry type systems. If you have a place in your kitchen to hang keys, aprons or coats, clear the space, and hang just one item to display the system. Having all the hooks filled doesn’t show the clever storage solution, it shows that you have too much stuff for them to use the space. Clear the shelves that might be a part of it, show its function without clutter.
