Three campuses. Three access patterns. One housing decision.
Myer, Henderson Hall and Fort McNair share a joint-base name, but they do not share one daily route. Start with the exact worksite, usable gate and reporting schedule before comparing homes.
Editorial review August 29, 2026. Recheck gate, shuttle and transit information before traveling.

Make the map smaller before you search
- 01Which campus and building? Myer, Henderson Hall and Fort McNair create different trips.
- 02Which gate can you use? Credential, visitor and pedestrian rules affect the last mile.
- 03What time must you report? Test the route at the real reporting window.
- 04How will you travel? Compare driving, transit, shuttle, walking and biking as complete chains.
- 05What must the housing budget cover? Include the payment or rent, dues, utilities, maintenance and transportation.
Confirm where “JBM-HH” means for your assignment
Do not begin with a town list. Ask your sponsor or gaining organization for the campus, building, authorized gate, parking situation and expected arrival time. Those details can change which side of Arlington or the Potomac makes sense to test.
Myer campus
Fort Myer sits beside Arlington National Cemetery. Vehicle access commonly centers on Hatfield or Wright Gate, while registered DoD ID holders may have pedestrian access through Henry Gate.
Henderson Hall
The Marine Corps campus is reached from South Orme Street/Southgate Road. Its main gate and hours are different from the Myer gates, so the same home can produce a different last mile.
Fort McNair
Fort McNair is across the Potomac in Southwest Washington. A route that works for Myer may not work for McNair; verify the correct installation entrance and visitor procedure.
Build the route around the gate you can actually use
JBM-HH publishes separate rules for DoD cardholders, pedestrians, visitors, rideshare and commercial access. Hatfield Gate is the Myer visitor entry; Wright Gate is a DoD-cardholder vehicle option; Henry Gate is pedestrian-only for properly registered DoD IDs. Henderson Hall and Fort McNair have their own entrances.
Compare complete commute chains
The useful comparison is door to desk, not map-pin to map-pin. A shorter drive can still lose time to a restricted gate or parking; a transit trip can work well only when the first and last mile match your schedule.
Drive
Test Route 50, Washington Boulevard, Route 110, I-395 and Columbia Pike only as they apply to your gate. Add security and parking time.
Transit + shuttle
Combine Metro or bus with the actual last mile. JBM-HH publishes a weekday Myer/Henderson Hall–Pentagon shuttle; verify eligibility and the current schedule.
Walk or bike
Check the exact authorized pedestrian entry, terrain, lighting, weather and secured-facility barriers. A straight line on a map may not be a legal or comfortable route.
Two workplaces
Score both commutes. A midpoint may balance two schedules better than optimizing one trip and making the other unpredictable.
Use the WMATA Trip Planner, Arlington Transit and the official newcomer page for current schedules and alerts.
See the decision geography
This schematic is intentionally not a turn-by-turn map. It shows why the correct campus and crossing matter before you compare homes.
Use corridors as research starting points—not rankings
Housing type, price, parking and commute reliability vary within every corridor. Compare a specific property against your worksite rather than treating a municipality as one uniform market.
Near-base Arlington
Pattern: apartments, condos, townhomes and detached homes at varied price points.
Test: the assigned gate, parking, pedestrian access and whether proximity actually removes a transfer.
Tradeoff: shorter geography may mean less space or a different housing type.
Columbia Pike / west Arlington
Pattern: a broad mix of multifamily and residential streets along a major bus corridor.
Test: east-end access, current construction, bus frequency and gate approach.
Tradeoff: the final mile can matter more than the corridor’s straight-line distance.
Alexandria and Falls Church
Pattern: urban, suburban and transit-oriented choices across independent cities and counties.
Test: Route 50/I-395 approaches, transit transfers, parking and the return trip.
Tradeoff: similar mileage can create very different routes depending on the address.
Springfield / inner Fairfax
Pattern: more townhome and detached-home inventory in many pockets.
Test: I-395, local-road alternatives and a realistic peak-period schedule.
Tradeoff: space or price options can come with a longer, more variable drive.

See active homes across the four research corridors
These live results cover Arlington, Alexandria, Falls Church and Springfield. They are intentionally limited to active single-family homes and townhomes—the two housing types most commonly compared by many VA-financed buyers in this guide’s research process.
Inventory changes continuously. A listing’s appearance here does not mean its commute, price, condition, financing eligibility or location will fit your assignment. Verify the specific address, route and property details before making a decision.
Translate BAH into a complete housing plan
BAH is based on your permanent duty ZIP, pay grade and dependency status. It is not designed to match every household’s actual cost and it does not determine what a lender will approve. Compare rent or ownership using the full monthly picture: payment, taxes, insurance, dues, utilities, maintenance, commute and cash reserves.
A remote process should reduce uncertainty—not hide it
Ask A Walker can structure a virtual search around your route, housing criteria and decision deadlines. The goal is to give you enough property and location evidence to make an informed choice, while identifying what cannot be verified remotely.
Define the route
Confirm campus, gate, schedule and acceptable commute variability.
Screen homes
Use live video, detailed property footage, disclosures and document review.
Verify the surroundings
Review objective access, transportation, property and market information without making suitability claims.
Coordinate locally
Manage inspections, lender/title milestones and the closing plan with the appropriate professionals.
They combined in-person and virtual service
Marc and Mary Elizabeth moved from Boston to Potomac Shores after finding Ask A Walker through YouTube. Their published client story explains how recorded virtual tours helped them revisit homes, share details with family, and make better use of limited in-person time. They also describe inspection support during their new-construction purchase.
JBM-HH PCS questions
Is Joint Base Myer–Henderson Hall one physical campus?
No. The joint base includes the Myer and Henderson Hall campuses in Arlington and Fort McNair in Washington, DC. Confirm your exact worksite before comparing homes.
Can I choose a home by its distance from Fort Myer?
Distance is only a screening tool. Test the exact address to the authorized gate at your actual reporting time and include security, parking and the walk to your building.
Is on-post family housing broadly available?
Official newcomer information describes a very limited inventory. Contact the housing office for current eligibility, wait-list and rental-partnership information before relying on an on-post option.
Does JBM-HH have a Pentagon shuttle?
The official newcomer page publishes a weekday Myer/Henderson Hall–Pentagon shuttle and a link to the current schedule. Verify eligibility, operating days and times directly before planning around it.
Does BAH tell me how much home I can buy?
No. BAH is one budget input. Loan approval and a sustainable purchase depend on income, debts, credit, assets, rate, taxes, insurance, fees, appraisal and lender guidelines.
