ASK A WALKER SCHOOL RESEARCH
How to Research Fairfax County Public Schools for a Specific Home
Start with an exact property address, then use this guide to understand the assigned schools, pyramid context, physical locations, and housing tradeoffs you still need to compare. Each section explains what the resource can—and cannot—tell you.
SCHOOL ASSIGNMENT
Verify the elementary, middle, and high-school assignments
A ZIP code, subdivision name, portal estimate, or nearby-school pin can point you in the wrong direction.
- 1Start with the complete property address
Include the street number and unit when applicable.
- 2Enter it in the official FCPS boundary locator
The district’s locator is the primary assignment check for the current school year.
- 3Review elementary, middle, and high-school results
Do not infer the entire sequence from one school or pyramid name.
- 4Recheck before signing or closing
Boundaries, programs, grade configurations, and future-year assignments can change.
SCHOOL LOCATIONS
Use the school map for orientation—not assignment
This map shows school buildings—not attendance boundaries. A nearby school is not necessarily the assigned school.
PYRAMIDS AND FEEDER SCHOOLS
Use pyramid context to understand common progressions and exceptions
A pyramid groups schools around a high-school context. “Feeder school” describes common progression patterns, but split feeders and exceptions mean a pyramid is not a substitute for address verification.
How to use this map: Select a high-school hub to open its pyramid guide. Pins show school buildings for orientation and do not establish assignment or a home’s feeder path.
ALL SCHOOL RECORDS
Search 200 Fairfax County public-school records
Filter 200 records by name, school level, location, ZIP code, FCPS region, or pyramid context. The directory helps you find official records; it does not assign a home.
HOUSING RESEARCH
After the school check, compare the property tradeoffs
School research can narrow the questions, but it cannot answer price, condition, commute, lease, or resale tradeoffs. Compare those factors alongside the address-specific school check.
Buying near a school
Review current listings, property condition, competition, commute, future resale considerations, and the timing needed to reconfirm school assignment.
Review the Northern Virginia home-buying process →Renting near a school
Verify the specific rental address, lease dates, application requirements, transportation, and whether a future-year assignment could affect the household.
